Why Tire Pressure Matters More Than You Think (And How to Check It Properly)

Many drivers don’t think about their tire pressure until a warning light comes on — but by then, your vehicle may already be losing efficiency, safety, and tire life. Proper tire pressure works hand-in-hand with regular tire rotations and wheel alignments to keep your vehicle driving smoothly and predictably.

Underinflated tires create extra rolling resistance, which forces your engine to work harder. This leads to reduced fuel economy, uneven tread wear, and increased heat buildup that can raise the risk of a blowout — especially when combined with worn or aging tires that should be replaced. Overinflated tires aren’t any better; they reduce traction, create a harsher ride, and cause the center of the tread to wear out prematurely.

Checking your tire pressure only takes a few minutes. Always measure pressure when the tires are cold, ideally before driving or at least three hours after parking. Use a quality tire pressure gauge and compare the reading to the manufacturer’s recommended PSI, which can usually be found on a sticker inside the driver’s door jamb — not on the tire sidewall.

This simple habit pairs well with routine vehicle inspections that catch issues early.

Seasonal temperature changes can also affect tire pressure. For every 10-degree drop in temperature, tire pressure can decrease by about one PSI. That’s why many drivers notice their TPMS light turning on in colder months — the same time of year when winter driving safety checks become especially important.

At Tire X, we check tire pressure during every service visit because small adjustments can make a big difference. Properly inflated tires improve handling, braking, fuel efficiency, and overall driving confidence. If you’re already scheduling an oil change or brake service, it’s the perfect time to have your tires checked as well.
